DANIEL CRAIG has no problem with getting his kit off for movies. The Bond star is seen in bed with two women in the opening scene of his new movie, Flashbacks of a Fool.
And female fans will get to see plenty of the muscle Daniel has put on for his 007 role.
“Getting naked on screen has never bothered me,” he laughed. “I’ve kind of made a career out of it.
“I work out, because that’s what I do now. It’s part of my job. I’ve always worked out to keep fit but if I know I’ve got to take my top off, I stop eating cakes.
“I keep myself as physically fit as possible because of what I’ve got to do in the movies, but I still end up as the walking wounded for the best part of six months when I’m making the Bond movies.”
Flashbacks of a Fool stars the 40-year-old actor as Joe Scott, a fading movie star, whose addiction to drink, drugs and women has sent his career into a downward spiral.
After the death of his childhood friend, Boots, Daniel goes into meltdown and remembers the events that drove him away from his English seaside home.
On a rare day off from the Bond shoot, Daniel looked fit as a fiddle dressed in an immaculate grey suit. No fading movie star this.
“The fact that Joe’s a movie star is really secondary,” he said.
“He’s a lonely man in a big house and he’s got everything he wants, or could have. He could have a career but he’s pushed it away. What he needs is friendship, and the support of people who genuinely love him rather than those who don’t.
“It’s staring him in the face but he can’t see it. He’s got a great family, if a bit dysfunctional, and he has a housekeeper, Ophelia, who could be the love of his life.
“It’s all there for him, and he’s f***ing it up. I liked that idea.”
Although he is an A-lister in Hollywood these days, Daniel avoids the pitfalls of fame by keeping close friends and family around him.
“I never mix in actory circles!” he told me.
“I’ve been around and I’ve seen a lot in my life. Everybody goes down the dark winding staircase occasionally and it’s not a good place to be, so having good friends is vitally important. They are the people who pull you out.
“The people that keep me grounded are the friends and family, who tell me what an ass**** I am!”
He also chooses a home in the UK rather than a Beverly Hills mansion.
“I don’t avoid living in LA for that reason,” he revealed. “I just prefer to live in London.”
“I spend a lot of time in LA and I like it there, it’s a good town – if a little crazy and full of freaks.”
So what does Daniel think leads the likes of Britney and Amy to the brink of self-destruction?
“Drugs mainly!” he joked.
“What makes them do that? Probably losing sight of who they are.
“I think it can get very lonely for people. Your real friends get pushed away. Whether you have any sympathy for them is a personal thing but people can get themselves in a state and turn to other things
“Everybody has a self-destructive streak. It happens in all walks of life but because they are in the public eye it causes a huge furore.
“The character I play is an alcoholic drug addict who, for the evening, is probably great entertainment and fun to be with but, to live with, it’s a nightmare. That’s the reality of addiction.”
After our interview it was straight back to work for Daniel, on the set of his second Bond movie, Quantum of Solace.
And, despite praise for his first 007 outing, Casino Royale, he reckons the pressure is still on.
“I’m no less nervous than I was,” he said.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever feel comfortable with it. You can’t say there’s less pressure when you make a $200 million dollar movie. The pressure is plain to see.
“We’ve got to make it as good as if not better than the last one and that’s all that matters.”
The Cheshire-born actor also praised his gorgeous Bond girls, OLGA KURYLENKO and GEMMA ARTERTON.
“Olga and Gemma are going to be amazing,” he said.
“They’re both very sexy girls which is very good. Olga’s the main ‘Bond girl’ in the movie but Gemma’s no less important.”
