Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman are starring on Broadway in a new drama and there are tentative plans for them to transfer with it to London.

The production is called A Steady Rain, written by Keith Huff, and it's a blistering portrait of two Chicago patrolmen caught up in a maelstrom of events that are recounted by Craig and Jackman on a stage bare except for two chairs.

Initially, it doesn't sound particularly gripping, but somehow director John Crowley has enticed his actors to crawl right beneath the skin of these cops, Joey (Craig) and Denny (Jackman).

Frederick Zollo, who is producing A Steady Rain with Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and others, told me he would 'love it to play the West End'. It's more a question of persuading Craig and Jackman to come over. Frankly, it would be a crime if they did not.

The picture the actors paint is not pretty. Joey and Denny are, to put it bluntly, racist pigs and their actions on the streets are as heinous as those perpetrated by cops in James Ellroy and David Peace novels.

Huff elevates to tragic dimensions the life of policemen the way Arthur Miller moulded Willy Loman in Death Of A Salesman. 'In any country, the work of cops is usually a thankless task,' Zollo observed.

In one scene, they recall how they came across a naked Vietnamese teenager but left him in the supposedly capable hands of an 'uncle'.

At the Sunday matinee I attended last weekend, the audience reeled in collective horror when Craig's Joey explained what later happened to the youth.

Earlier, Jackman's Denny talks of driving a prostitute to her run-down apartment, where she takes a baby from the sock drawer in which the child had been left alone, then making love to her as she breastfeeds the kid. Denny calls it 'the closest thing I had to a religious experience since my first communion'.

A Steady Rain is the most potent new play on Broadway - and Messrs Craig and Jackman are electrifying, with the audience craning forward, gasping with each stunning revelation.

From what I can gather, once the play has its formal opening night this Tuesday, the actors will be asked about their thoughts on London.

Interestingly, at one point it was going to come here first. Cameron Mackintosh held the Gielgud Theatre for it, but other forces were in play.

Zollo, Wilson and Broccoli have also acquired the film rights. Huff is writing the screenplay, and Craig and Jackman will surely be in the movie.

James Bond (played recently by Daniel Craig) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) are tough guys, but apparently not intimidating enough to silence a cell phone. In a recent production of Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig's 'A Steady Rain' on Broadway, an audience member's phone began ringing, prompting Jackman (without missing a beat or dropping character), to ask the interrupter if they'd like to pick up (video embedded above). As it continued ringing, Jackman even invited the person on stage "if they want to get up and tell their story." Later, another call occurred, and this time Craig retorted.

Despite the rude interjection, it should be noted that both Craig and Jackman -- a Brit and an Aussie, respectively -- kept their accents, and tempers, in check. Also, word to the wise: for the price of a ticket to a sold-out, critically acclaimed show (like 'A Steady Rain'), it's not just the actors that will be annoyed by the cell phone faux pas, but the audience, as well. James Bond and Wolverine together would be a deadly combination at the best of times. So when one New York theatregoer’s phone began ringing in the middle of an intense Broadway performance by Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, the audience member who owned the mobile no doubt died with embarrassment.

"You want to get that?" Jackman said, addressing the audience while still in character when the annoying mobile rang in the middle of a preview performance of A Steady Rain in New York last week.

The Australian actor, better known as the metal-clawed action hero Wolverine, is starring in the two-handed drama alongside Craig, the British 007 film star.

Perhaps pretending it wasn’t them, or maybe fumbling in the darkness to try and turn off the offending phone, the audience member let the phone ring a few more times.

"I don’t care, grab it. Grab your phone, it doesn't matter," said Jackman, still using his character’s Chicago accent and pacing the stage in annoyance.

“Come on, just turn it off unless you got a better story, you want to get up and tell your story?” Jackman continued, to applause from the rest of the audience.

Then it was the turn of Craig, sitting in a chair on stage and looking very unamused.

“Can you get that, whoever it is can you just get it? We can wait, just get the phone,” he said, glaring into the audience.

The interruption occurred during an intense moment in the play, as Jackman's character, a Chicago policeman, reveals haunting memories.

An amateur video of the incident was posted on the celebrity website TMZ.com, and has since been relayed on sites around the world.

A Steady Rain, by playwright Keith Huff, is a drama about two Chicago policemen and their differing accounts of a few days that changed their lives. Both Jackman and Craig adopt Chicago accents for their characters.

Early reviews of the sold-out play, which officially opens on Tuesday at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, have praised the two actors, with a BBC review saying the pair had a "natural rapport and shared the spotlight," meeting all audience expectations.

Jackman, the 40-year-old star of the Wolverine and X-Men movies, is returning to Broadway after his Tony award-winning run as the Australian singer Peter Allen in the 2004 musical The Boy From Oz.

Craig is making his Broadway debut in A Steady Rain, which is expected to break box-office records for a non-musical play on Broadway during its 12-week run.

Daniel Craig survives Broadway show without any mobile interruptions... it's only the praise of critics which rings out

Daniel Craig's muscular arms, toned six pack and tanned torso have helped make the actor a household name.

But fans of his alter ego James Bond might be disappointed if they visit Broadway to watch Craig's new play, A Steady Rain.

For while the actor's performance has been praised by critics, his fans have been quick to express their disappointment that the sex symbol 'keeps his clothes on'.

The play has already made headlines after the leading men berated a theatregoer whose mobile phone rang during the middle of a preview performance.

However, it was a case of all right on the night as the show opened officially.

The 41-year-old beat Brad Pitt to the title of Hollywood's Hottest Torso earlier this month, following the now-iconic scene of him emerging from the sea in Casino Royale.

But on stage he stars alongside X-Men star Hugh Jackman as a Chicago cop with a handlebar moustache, pale skin and baggy trousers.

The New York Times critic Ben Brantley was typical of many in praising Craig's portrayal of Joey as 'registering large and lucid'.
But he cautioned: 'The woman with whom I saw the show made her priorities clear afterward, and they are doubtless shared by many.

'If only, she said, the play had been set in a police station locker room, where the characters might frequently change clothes.

'As it was, she was thankful for the small mercy that, toward the play’s end, Mr Craig finally removed his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves.'

And The Independent's David Usborne also bemoaned the lack of 'peeling off of shirts', while praising the 'sheer meatiness' of Craig's performance.

He added: 'A measure of Mr Craig's performance is this: not in a million years would you imagine that in another life this man called Joey, up on stage with a drooping moustache, sad eyes and flat hair could possibly be a suave spy-hero called James Bond.'

The Washington Post prefers Craig's performance to that of his equally hunky co-star Jackson, saying he 'fares far better here'.

And The Times' Matt Wolf agreed, praising Craig, who made his name on the London stage before landing the role as the sixtth Bond.

'Craig, intriguingly, inhabits his part like a character actor unexpectedly turned star who has been given the chance to remind us of his serious acting chops,' he writes.

But will that be enough to satisfy his fans?

вспомнилось по теме урока...

А слабо прийти в театр с пепси и попкорном (а потом пить и есть во время первых 15 минут), как это было с моими соседями на спектакле в Лондонском театре? Я была в шоке, правда на них так все посмотрели, что им стало стыдно, и они отложили еду

Кста, на спектакле уже побывали сонм всяких знаменитостей кроме вышеперечисленных, оказывается был и Джерард Батлер, и Дженнифер Энистон (ха, наверно еще не оставила попытку выбить роль Бондгёл Дэна караулит) и Джоэл Шумахер, и Марк Форстер (к сож его почти вырезали с этой фотки, где стоит рядом с Сац http://i843.photobucket.com/albums....011.jpg )
