Tintin video unveiled
HAT-TRICK: Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg promote their first Tintin movie via an online video, paying homage to bungling detectives Thomson and Thompson.
Everyone knows Hollywood giants Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg are collaborating on three Tintin movies, but rarely has the public seen the two top film-makers in the same place.
A new online video shows them not only together, but with the potential to be a snappy comic duo.
The official website for Tintin unveiled this week a two-minute video recording of Jackson and Spielberg made for the the Angouleme International Comics Festival in France.
In the video Jackson and Spielberg wear bowler hats and carry umbrellas as a homage to two of the Tintin series' most popular characters, the bungling detectives Thomson and Thompson. They are seated between a cardboard cutout of Tintin, the plucky Belgian detective.
"We're here to celebrate Tintin's 80th year in existence," said Spielberg, who is directing the first Tintin film Secret of the Unicorn.
"[He's] no longer the young man you see behind us," quipped Jackson. "But it's a movie about an 80-year-old young reporter. He's got long grey hair, [a] long grey beard.
"You wait till you see it. It's going to be amazing."
"It's been a long row to hoe, but here we are," said Spielberg, who bought the rights to Tintin after making Raiders of the Lost Ark. "It's an honour for me to be working with my friend Peter Jackson for the first time."
"And the same for me," said Jackson. "And I'm glad that we're making Tintin before we reach our 80th birthday."
Spielberg completed the shooting of Secret of the Unicorn in Los Angeles this month. Work is continuing at Weta Digital in Wellington.

"Every movie I made, up until Tintin, I always kept one eye closed when I've been framing a shot," Spielberg told me. That's because he wanted to see the movie in 2-D, the way moviegoers would. "On Tintin, I have both of my eyes open."

You’ve just filmed Tintin. How was your experience with motion capture?
It was a weird experience. It was quite hard as an actor, because you have to totally pull it out of somewhere. You’re dressed in what looks like a bizarre scuba-diving outfit with a helmet on, with a camera and a light pointed at your face the whole time. And you’ve got dots all over your face! So me, Nick [Frost], Jamie Bell and Daniel Craig were all doing scenes together, taking it very seriously – although it’s a light-hearted adventure, you have to take it seriously - and we just looked ridiculous. We were in this massive grey space called The Volume that represents an area of the studio that can be rendered digitally. Once you enter The Volume you see yourself on the monitor as your character. So Nick and I looked at the monitor and we were the Thomson Twins, although nowhere near as good as it’ll eventually look… It was better than an N64 game, but nowhere near as amazing it will be. So you can look at yourself and move around and see the characters moving, which is how Nick and I can look absolutely identical.
And how was Spielberg as a director? Surely that’s a pinch-me moment.
You get it when you meet him. When you watch him work and you hear him speak and you see him having ideas, you completely understand why he is where he is. He’s such a clever man. And Peter Jackson was directing us on iChat, from New Zealand, so Steven would come out and go “Great… Now try it this way” and then you’d hear this other voice go "Hello guys, it’s Peter!" And he’d be coming over the tannoy like God. And him and Steven work really well together – there was never any “Oh, shut up, Steven!” They took each other’s ideas onboard.
Was there much opportunity for a good geek-out?
He was so willing to talk about stuff. We had a great chat about Close Encounters, about George Lucas coming to see him on the set, just after he’d finished Star Wars, and seeing the Devil’s Tower set and all the extras and just being so depressed, because he totally thought Star Wars was a piece of shit. And he said to Steven “Do you want to swap points?” So they gave each other two points from each other’s films, and Steven made a fortune from Star Wars! It’s so funny to talk to him about that, and ET and Raiders… to have that level of access to someone of whom I’m such a huge fan is such a privilege. Nick and I left the room that day and jumped up and down in the corridor. We couldn’t believe that we’d had this talk.

Anyway
Empire.
№2 The Adventures Of Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn
Our second most-anticipated 3D flick, after Avatar, uses the same system that Cameron designed and, indeed, shot at the same location in LA, also known as The Volume. Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, long-time fans of the intrepid, bequiffed boy detective, will team up for this two-part mocap extravaganza, with Spielberg taking the directorial reins for the first instalment. Co-scripted by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, Secret Of The Unicorn will see Tintin (Jamie Bell) and his dog Snowy become involved in a search for ancient treasure. Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost also star in a film that we expect will look like one of Herge's books come to life.

First Official Behind-the-Scenes Photo from Tintin
April 17, 2009
Source: Empire
by Alex Billington
Just like James Cameron's Avatar, the powers that be have tricked us yet again with the very first photo from The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. Revealed on Empire this morning, the photo is another simple behind-the-scenes shot of Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis in their motion capture outfits with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson standing by. As a reminder (and if you couldn't tell by reading the names on their outfits), Bell plays Tintin, Serkis plays Captain Haddock, and they're joined by Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Tony Curran, and a few others. Click on the photo below for more from Empire.
If this is only our first shot now, when they just finished shooting for 32 days back in early March, then I'm sure it'll be a very long time until we see a fully rendered finish frame from the movie. This photo does come from the 20th anniversary issue if Empire, though, and they promise, "more pictures, and more on the cast involved," so who knows? I'm not sure a set photo like this is really going to make me any more excited for this, even if I am excited to see Bell and Serkis working again (since they were last in Peter Jackson's King Kong together). We'll be sure to let you know if any more photos, finished or not, pop up anytime soon.
